Introduction: The postgraduate entrance exam in the field of medical sciences is held annually to attract students for the purpose of training competent human resources. This study endeavored to analyze grades of the postgraduate entrance exam of medical universities to obtain a more accurate perspective on the preferences of candidates for different fields and universities, based on their grade point average (GPA) and average normalized scores (ANS).

Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted in the year 2023 at Kerman University of Medical Sciences. The data was extracted from the aggregated information of the entrance exam for master's degree programs in the medical group in the year 2022, provided by the Assessment Organization of the Ministry of Health, Treatment, and Medical Education. The variables included university and accepted field of study, number of admissions, ANS, GPA, and gender of the admitted students. In total, 122 universities were included and divided into four categories based on the frequency of student admissions. Then analyzed the correlation and classification of universities and fields based on the student's GPA and ANS.

Results: There was a significant difference in the GPA and ANS of universities based on the number of acceptances (p<.05). Universities with a high number of acceptances had higher GPAs and ANS. Among them, Iran University of Medical Sciences and Tehran University of Medical Sciences had the highest GPA and ANS, while Islamic Azad University, Science and Research Branch of Tehran had the lowest. While the GPA of female undergraduate students was significantly higher than male students (p<.001), there was no significant difference in their ANS (P=0.193). The Pearson correlation test indicated a significant positive relationship between the GPA and ANS of admitted students across all universities as well as those with high and very high admissions (p<.05). The universities and fields of study were categorized into three clusters based on high, medium, and low GPAs and ANS.

Conclusion: In general, the findings clearly indicate the differences between universities and different fields of study based on the GPA and ANS. Universities that attract a larger number of students had admitted candidates with higher GPA and ANS. Therefore, a thorough analysis of results of such exam seems necessary for better policymaking.
