Introduction: A regular study plan as well as applying appropriate study skills and habits is of a great importance for students to meet their educational needs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the study skills and habits of students in Birjand University of Medical Sciences. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on a random sample of 238 students of Birjand University of Medical Sciences in 2011. Data was collected using Palsane & Shrama Study Habit Inventory Questionnaire (PSSHI) and demographic characteristics. Spearman correlation coefficient, t-test for independent groups, ANOVA, and Tukey test were used for data analysis. Results: The mean score (±SD) of the students’ study habits was 45.07 (±7.81) out of 90 (maximum score). 32.8 % of the students had poor study habits, 31.1% average, 14.3% good, and 21.8 % had excellent study habits. There was a significant, weak, but positive relationship between the students’ study habits and their academic performance (P<0.001, r=0.22). There was a significant relationship between some subscales of study habits and sex, degree program, time to prepare for the exam, study time, sources of study, and father's education. There wasn’t any significant relationship between areas of study habits and living places, mother's education, and marital status. Conclusion: Generally speaking, the students’ study habits are considered to be moderate. Teaching study skills in educational workshops or courses can help students learn and understand better.
